We, two Master of Planning students at SAPL - University of Calgary, are working on an academic project together with the community of Crossroads. We would love to involve you in this exciting process and know your thoughts on our project as well as about Crossroads! There are opportunities to engage through the tools below this description.

Cross of Culture is a design proposal that celebrates the unique backgrounds of people in Calgary. We propose to create lively markets in Mayland Heights and Vista Heights that represent the different cultural backgrounds of people living in the community. We hope that our proposal will help to remove the stigma associated with the city's northeast and is adopted by other communities too.

Check out 'Our Story' and 'Our Studio Journey' - a brief visual description of our studio process through the widgets on the right. You can learn more about our design proposal through:

1. Design Proposal Phase 2: Presentation (April 15, 2020) - https://vimeo.com/408532670

2. The images posted in 'C: Phase 1 Vision Posters' on the right

    Arte Market, Dubai

by Avril, almost 4 years ago

Arte Market, Dubai is a weekend market set up in various malls across Dubai, exclusively for handmade items created in the UAE. This ensures nurturing of local businesses and crafts. Each piece at the market is unique, since commercial or mass-produced items are not allowed to be sold. There is generally a screening process for first-time vendors followed by Arte which ensures high quality of vendor items displayed.

Dubai is a melting pot of cultures, and the variety of items in this market is testimony to that. Prominent influences are European, Middle Eastern and Indian. The eclectic mix of items... Continue reading

    My Experience in Berlin

by Rhea , almost 4 years ago

The Arts & Crafts market in Berlin, Germany is a market that I fondly remember. Situated in one of the most historic sites, the Brandenburg gate, this market welcomed people from all over the world. Being a tourist destination, the market not only sold arts, crafts and souvenirs but also engaged its visitors in music concerts, food tasting events and educational talks. I believe a market is considered unique and exciting when it is designed in a manner that caters to all kinds of age groups and entertains its visitors of different interests.

The overall design must provide spaces for... Continue reading

Revamping a train station into a market place Nice, France

by Keiran Pais, almost 4 years ago

The historic "Gare de Sud" in Nice, France once a train station known for its architecture of the 19th century inspired by the work of Gustav Eiffel has been transformed from housing busy, working crowds to relaxed locals and tourists. The whistling sounds of the trains have now given way to popular french music.

You enter the portals of this market through the original entrance of the railway station. As you enter, you will notice that the waiting and ticketing rooms are converted into a library and many exhibition spaces. The main attraction is the food court located in the... Continue reading

    The "Shandy" in Chikmangalore, India

by Keiran Pais, almost 4 years ago

A walk through the traditional "Shandy" every Wednesday from dawn to dusk in Chikmangalore, India will take you through a country side set up. Name it and you will find it. The vibrant shades of clothes, balloons, trinkets and toys will add colour to an otherwise dull atmosphere. The local produce from the surrounding villages are carted to the market place on bullock carts and donkey backs. The huslte and bustle of auctioning livestock reared in the farms is something worth watching.

Local delicacies ranging from the hot spicy chilly bondas, crackling of peanuts to the sweet Jalebis will definitely activate... Continue reading

    My Experiences in Different Markets

by boxu.zeng, almost 4 years ago

I have experienced some different markets since I grew up in Beijing and studied abroad almost 7 years in Toronto and Calgary. Market for me is not a place merely for shopping, it could be considered as a cultural congregation place.

There is a market in Chinese culture which called 庙会 (Temple Fair). This event is held during the Chinese New Year Festival. The Temple Fair is a very traditional activities that sells some traditional products, snacks, or toys. There are always a number of people here, not merely to buy products, but to experience the liveliness in holiday.

    The... Continue reading

    Traveling Market in Wilamowice, Poland

by Piotr, almost 4 years ago

My first experience with markets were the early morning markets that would stop by in the main square of my grandmas town. She taught at the local school when she was younger and went on to become the mayor before she retired, she had many friends in the town so it was always a social occasion. My mom would try and get me to stand still for long enough to decide on a new shirt to wear, however being the curious cat that i was i was more interested in the BB guns and knives that were on display. Always... Continue reading

Markets in Penang and Tel Aviv

by Nathan, almost 4 years ago

Penang's food markets are the crossroads of food in Asia. Malaysia is a multicultural country, and sharing culture began there as it often does through food. Chinese Hawker stalls are next to Indian food stalls, and the cuisine of Malaysia is a meeting of the flavours of different parts of Asia, coming together into something amazing and unique.

Cultures seem to want to learn and share with one another, and the often the easiest way to do this is through food if language is a barrier. One of the most famous Mexican dishes is Al Pastor. It was created by... Continue reading
